Website Design Timeline: An 8 Week Plan For Success

As a web designer with nearly two decades of experience, one of the most common questions that I get asked is – what does the website design timeline look like?

The answer to this is going to vary based on a few different factors:

  • Scope of the website design (number of pages, website functionality, etc.)
  • Any additional functionality or pages that you envision having on the new website build
  • Client’s availability for feedback (I like to allow for extra padding around holidays or time off periods)

Most of my Visionary Custom Website builds take a total of 8 weeks.

Why A Website Design Timeline Is Needed

By outlining each phase from conception to launch, a website design timeline not only keeps the project on track but also ensures that everyone involved stays aligned with the vision and goals. This structured approach minimizes miscommunication and sets realistic expectations, paving the way for a successful website launch.

A detailed website design timeline also serves as a roadmap for both parties, allowing for effective collaboration. When each stage is mapped out—kickoff calls, mockup reviews, revisions, and the website build process—everyone knows what to expect. Having this in place empowers clients to be actively engaged in the process, ensuring their ideas and feedback are incorporated at every crucial step. It’s a win-win situation that leads to a final product that truly reflects the client’s vision.

Moreover, having a timeline allows for the integration of quality checks throughout the design process. By building in time for revisions and quality assurance, we can catch potential issues early, saving time and resources in the long run. A well-planned website design timeline not only enhances efficiency but also elevates the quality of the final product, ensuring that your website stands out in a crowded digital landscape.

What An Example Website Design Timeline Looks Like

Week 0: Contract Signed, Payment Received

Our web design adventure begins with a signed contract and payment received! This step is super important as it solidifies our partnership and ensures we’re all on the same page for the project deliverables. I also send over onboarding materials that will guide you through sharing all of your brand design materials, website content, and creative vision for the build.

Week 1: Website Kickoff Call, Mockups Begin

Next up, we hop on a kickoff call! We’ll chat about your ideas, goals, and all the fabulous details you have submitted within the onboarding process. Once we ensure we are on the same page for the direction, I start whipping up some of your website mockups. This is where the magic starts to happen!

Week 2: First 2 Mockups Sent for Review

In this phase – I get to share the first two mockups with you, and you get to give any feedback that you may have on the designs so far. This is where many of my clients really start to get excited about the design – and it allows us to confirm that we are on the right track from a visual perspective. I also include revisions based on your feedback – so that we get the designs perfectly aligned with your vision!

Week 3: Full Suite of Website Designs Created

Once I’ve polished the first two mockups, it’s time for the grand reveal of a full suite of website designs! This set will give you a wholistic look at what the entire site will look like.

Week 4: Revisions Integrated

After gathering your feedback, I’ll integrate those revisions and send the updated designs your way for a final review. This is a key moment in our website design timeline—I want everything to be absolutely perfect before we dive into the build!

Week 5: Website Build Begins

And just like that, it’s build time! With your designs approved, I roll up my sleeves and start building out your website to be a fully-functioning masterpiece. I take special care to integrate web design best practices (including integration of search engine optimization techniques, etc.) so that you get a site that will help to attract and engage your most ideal clients.

Week 7: Quality Checks

During this phase, every detail of your new website build is meticulously quality-checked to ensure everything runs smoothly. I want your users to have an incredible experience when they visit your site!

Week 8: Client Approves Website for Launch

Drumroll, please! I’m thrilled to present the final website for your approval! This is the moment we’ve all been waiting for in our website design timeline. Once you give the green light, we’ll set a launch date. I also will create a handy training video series for you – so that you feel confident making website changes on your own after the launch is complete.
